Overview
Since the publication of The Scarlet Letter in 1850, Nathaniel Hawthorne has been recognized as one of America’s most important writers, both a “romancer” who probed inner mysteries and a “realist” who assessed the American character and experience.
"The author has perhaps attained such a secure place within the canon of American literature precisely due to the versatility of his work and the breadth of his style, which displays elements of various periods, styles, and genres" (Palladino, 72). He “once called himself the ‘obscurest man in American letters.’ Nevertheless, his remarkable achievements as a novelist and short-story writer have given him a lasting reputation in American letter” (Wright 3).
